The Bad Things about New York

Someone recently told me that when you move away from the city, all you can remember are the good things about living here. Since I love NY, I am sure I will be guilty of this. So this list is for those days when I'm missing the city like crazy and can't remember why we ever left it.

1. Paying over $4k in rent. For a large one-bedroom apartment. Oh and that rent? Our management said it would have likely gone up 10% at the end of our lease in October due to the city's soaring rental market. (Funny -- I don't mind living in a large one-bedroom apartment. I just mind paying that much for it.)

2. Running down the street pushing a stroller and screaming "stop at the corner!" at the top of my lungs.

3. Elliot sleeping in a closet. Yes, it's true.

4. One bathroom. There are few things less pleasant than being in the middle of something only to have Elliot knock on the door screaming, "I have to go PEE!"

 5. January and February.

And that's all I can think of! Help me, people!

***Late Night Addition***

My friend, Christie, responded to my cry for help with this little gem: 8.4 Million New Yorkers Suddenly Realize.  Be warned -- the language in it is truly terrible.  That said, I haven't laughed that hard in a long time.  My favorite part is about the slow walkers.  I have so been there.

Four thousand?! Holy crap. We have experienced some high rent prices (LA, DC) but never that much. Now I want to hear about Texas!

-subway face
-the horrible smells

I hated how the street smells would trick you, luring you in with an incredibly delicious smell ... just when you inhale deeply, WHAM! it smacks you in the face with the smell of garbage or sweaty people.

And though you mentioned it, the worst were the slow floating walkers. You know, the super slow kind that can't even walk in a straight path, blocking you at every step from trying to pass them.

Leaving NYC is sad, but life is good in other parts of the country. I promise!

Loved the Onion article. How about having friends or friends of acquaintances asking to stay with you while they're in the city? and friends dragging you to Phantom for the umpteenth time because they want to see a show but didn't plan ahead or are on a budget? :)

And the slow walkers reminded me of this radiolab article which says among other things you can predict a city's crime rate as a function of the average foot speed of its pedestrians. Cool.

I'll stop commenting on this post one of these days....

haha! that made me laugh. I swear it sounded like it was coming right from Brian's mouth (you know, minus the f words). I appreciated the shout out to Arizona :)

oh and just imagine these words coming out of your mouth: "elliot, its time to go in the backyard and play by yourself for a little while". Did that put a smile on your face?
